Statement by High Representative/Vice-President Catherine Ashton on Gaza Flotilla

High Representative/Vice-President Catherine Ashton deeply regrets the loss of life as a result of the Israeli military operation against the Flotilla sailing to Gaza. Catherine Ashton extends her sympathies to the family and friends of those killed and wounded in this event.

The EU strongly condemns any acts of violence and deplores any excessive use of force. In this regard, on behalf of the EU, the High Representative is requesting a full immediate enquiry by the Israeli authorities.

The continued policy of closure of Gaza is unacceptable and politically counterproductive and the EU calls for the swift and full implementation of UNSC Resolution 1860.

The EU reiterates call for an immediate, sustained and unconditional opening of crossings in Gaza for the flow of humanitarian aid, commercial goods and persons to and from Gaza.
